Shaft: A vertical or near vertical tunnel in a mine is known as a shaft. They are used both for ventilation and to allow access to or egress (of people or materials) from deep workings. Some shafts remain open and can be easily recognized today, although more commonly they have become choked with debris and some may have been deliberately backfilled to prevent mine collapse
