Title
Jordan. Amman, lecture on “Sugar, Safi and SCHEP: Industrial Archaeology” by Konstantinos Politis at ACOR
Description
The USAID Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project, implemented by ACOR, supported and participated in a number of special events, high-level meetings, lectures, and conferences from 2014 – 2018. Such events provided opportunities to exchange knowledge, develop and present policies and guidelines, plan collaborations, and strengthen the community of practice around Jordan’s heritage. In February 2016, Ghawr as Safi Project Director Konstantinos D. Politis gave a lecture at ACOR entitled “Sugar, Safi and SCHEP: Industrial Archaeology.” In addition to highlighting discoveries made during more than 30 years of archaeological work in the regions south of the Dead Sea, this lecture highlighted initial efforts, funded by USAID SCHEP, to make the medieval sugar factory (Masna’a as Sukkar) in Ghawr as Safi more presentable and understandable to visitors, as well as conservation and museum training programs being organized for the Safi community.
