Jordan. Petra, Temple of the Winged Lions, southwest quadrant, facing north
Description
The Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project (USAID SCHEP) is a cooperative agreement between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR). The first phase of the project was implemented from 2014 until 2018 at nine heritage sites throughout Jordan.

The Temple of Winged Lions lies at the heart of Petra’s city center and is named for the distinct lion-shaped capitals that rested atop its central columns. An idol of the Nabataean goddess Al-Uzza was discovered at the temple, leading scholars to believe that this deity was worshipped here. SCHEP supported site development activities at the site through ACOR’s Temple of the Winged Lions Cultural Resource Management Initiative (TWLCRM).
