Description
enThe Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project (USAID SCHEP) is a cooperative agreement between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR). The first phase of the project was implemented from 2014 until 2018 at nine heritage sites throughout Jordan. Aqaba, as it is now called, was known during Islamic times as Ayla, the jewel of the Red Sea. The city served as an important regional port, and holds a vital place in Jordanian maritime and Islamic heritage. In Ayla, SCHEP signed an agreement The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) to implement the “Discover the Depth of Aqaba Marine Heritage Project” in 2017 and 2018. Key activities of this project included underwater surveying, GIS mapping, and design and installation of new interpretive signs at the Ayla archaeological site.
