Capacity building is an important part of the USAID SCHEP model for promoting the sustainable management of Jordan’s cultural heritage. From 2014 – 2018, SCHEP implemented training programs and workshops in skills related to cultural heritage conservation, management, interpretation, and presentation, for over 300 heritage professionals, recent graduates, local community members, and others. SCHEP also helped to support local heritage institutions in the development of policies and guidelines related to cultural heritage management in Jordan. SCHEP presented new Archaeological Site Usage Guidelines at a three-day workshop in Aqaba that included a visit to the Ayla archaeological site. More than 30 key stakeholders, including then Director-General of the DOA Dr. Monther Jamhawi and other senior staff, were in attendance. The discussions that took place in this workshop allowed experts from across the country to share their ideas on how to balance environmental and conservation concerns alongside the desire to widen access to and usage of Jordan’s cultural heritage resources.
