Description
From March 7 to 11, 2021, USAID SCHEP held a week-long, 25-hour training in drone theory and operation for selected employees of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA). SCHEP, which is implemented by the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR), planned this training in response to the need for such technology to monitor the UNESCO World Heritage Site and surveil the wider area to prevent vandalism and other illegal practices. The training was led by a licensed drone operator and experienced videographer from ChickMania Entertainment, based in Amman, and participants included PDTRA staff who will be responsible for operating the drones inside Petra, as well as those who will work alongside them. While the PDTRA is already equipped with the drones needed to perform these essential tasks, the staff are lacking in specialized training in the operation of the devices, processing the resulting data, and the understanding of how drone technology can benefit a site such as Petra on the whole. Thanks to this training, the PDTRA is now better-equipped to operate cutting-edge technologies to ensure the continued security and preservation of this unique and important site.
